Our Story

Founded out of a deep passion for natural beauty, unique design, and sustainable development, AFRICAN SLABS seeks to fundamentally improve the timber industry in Africa and beyond. CEO, Christopher Plummer, is an innovative architect and furniture designer with a global vision. After years of storied experience at the helm of a supremely successful design firm in New York City, Chris decided to move back to East Africa where he was born and raised. For 8 years, he wandered the African continent from East to West, searching for interesting and unique natural building materials. The road eventually lead him to Gabon, where an incredible variety of tree species exist within the old growth rainforest.

Everything clicked, and AFRICAN SLABS was born out of the realization that a sizable niche market demand could be fulfilled in a way that is both environmentally sustainable and economically viable. A team has been built around the vision that delivering excellent products to clients can be done with utmost respect for nature conservation and community.

“Timber can be harvested, processed, and distributed sustainably. The unjust methods of the current timber industry must change. This is the conclusion I drew after decades of experience traveling across the African continent I call home. Our people deserve better, as do our forests and natural resources in general.” ~ Christopher Plummer, AFRICAN SLABS & UBORA DESIGN Founder and CEO
